Digital Literacy and Civic Awareness Program for Underprivileged Students

The Shri Shakti Consciousness Foundation (SSCF) launched the Digital Literacy and Civic Education Initiative to address the lack of IT access and civic awareness among primary school children (ages 6–12) in urban slums of Gurgaon, Haryana. These children, from low-income families, have minimal exposure to digital tools and civic education, leaving them vulnerable, digitally illiterate, and unprepared for future opportunities. The initiative aims to equip them with essential IT skills, foster creativity, and instill a sense of civic responsibility, thereby bridging the digital divide and laying the groundwork for lifelong learning and informed citizenship.

Digital Literacy Program in Gurgaon

In the heart of Gurugram’s underserved urban slum communities, a silent revolution has begun—powered not by large machines or towering infrastructure, but by the curiosity and enthusiasm of young children eager to learn. The Shree Shakti Consciousness Foundation (SSCF) recognized a deep need: children aged 6–12 from low-income families were missing out on digital literacy and civic understanding, two critical tools for navigating and thriving in the modern world. With minimal access to computers and digital learning, and no grounding in civic responsibility, these children faced a future with limited choices. To change that narrative, SSCF launched its Digital Literacy and Civic Education Initiative—a vibrant 9-week journey designed to ignite young minds, introduce technology with care, and plant the seeds of responsible citizenship.

The program enrolled 25 enthusiastic learners and introduced them to computers, digital tools, internet safety, and responsible online behavior. From creating presentations and sending emails to exploring banking concepts and government platforms like Aadhaar, students gained practical tech skills. They also learned to navigate essential websites, use AI tools like ChatGPT, and apply their learning through hands-on activities like booking train tickets or finding exam materials online.

Beyond digital literacy, the initiative wove in civic education—introducing children to voting rights, digital identity, respectful communication, hygiene, and teamwork. Health and safety were reinforced through daily sanitization routines, and creativity was encouraged through drawing, storytelling, and interactive games.

By the end of the course, students not only gained foundational IT knowledge but also a strong sense of self-worth, civic awareness, and curiosity. The program culminated in the creation of their own presentations, email communications, and participation in conversations with local doctors and police officials—marking a significant step in bridging the digital and social equity gap.

SSCF’s initiative is a testament to what is possible when opportunity meets potential.
